There are a lot of lies I’ve been combating lately. I don’t know where they come from and I don’t know if it matters. All I know is it’s a full time job to counter the lies with truth and I’ve been trying so hard lately to do just that. Sometimes my friends help me to see that I’m thinking inaccurate things about myself. Sometimes it feels like a gentle hint from God. But for the first time in my life, I’m questioning the thoughts I allow myself to believe. I’m placing a pause between thought and feeling, which is unnatural to me, and might be for you too. But I think it’s a better way to be. And I hope this is a habit we cultivate for the rest of our lives.
Maybe you’ll relate to some of these things I’m tempted to believe. Maybe you won’t and you’ll think I’m crazy. (That’s ok.) But maybe no one has ever told you to question the thoughts you believe about yourself, so I’m here to tell you to question all of them. Chances are you believe some pretty ugly things about yourself that aren’t true.
Here are mine:
— LIES —
You have to be the most beautiful to be loved.
You are not worthy of love.
You are going to get your heart broken.
You are going to be taken advantage of.
Your body is not ok.
Your personality is hard to deal with.
You’ll probably never find a guy who can “deal” with you.
You haven’t really changed.
You’ll never really change.
You are lazy. You don’t do enough.
You are going to lose everything you’ve worked so hard for.
You are selfish.
You are a fraud.
You’re a mess.
— TRUTH —
You are beautiful in your own unique way and your beauty is far deeper than your physical appearance.
You are worthy of love.
You might get your heart broken but you will be ok.
You can set boundaries and take precautions to avoid being taken advantage of. You can trust your instincts. Some people make messes and will hurt you but you are strong enough to withstand it. Being vulnerable (and smart) is the best way to live.
Your body is feminine and beautiful.
Your personality is unique and quirky and adorable.
You don’t need a guy to be ok. YOU DON’T NEED A GUY TO BE OK.
But in the event you do find “the one” — he will delight in your quirks and find your complexities fascinating.
You have grown SO MUCH. You still have a lot of growing to do but God is gentle and will guide you through it in time.
You will continue to grow as long as you stay humble and present.
You are a powerhouse. You have achieved nearly every goal you’ve ever set for yourself. Not only that but you are passionate about inspiring others to reach their potential and live their dream and that’s awesome.
You might lose people/money/status/things in this lifetime but if you do, you’ll be ok.
You are thoughtful and constantly consider others’ feelings, needs, and opinions.
You are authentic. You push yourself outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself to take risks before you’re ready. You are brave and you are honest.
You might be messy and life might be confusing sometimes but YOU are not a mess. You are doing your best and you are doing great.
If you struggle with believing lies, you are not alone. Everyone struggles – no matter how carefully curated their instagram is or how put together they look on the outside. If you feel like sharing some of the lies you struggle with below, I would love to hear them to know I’m not alone and so I can encourage you to believe the truth about yourself. Be bold. Share this with a friend. Talk about the things you think. You are not alone.
