Ever felt like you were meant to be somebody? Like you were meant to contribute something valuable to this wild and crazy world, and maybe even make a positive impact on a person or two? I’ve resigned that I’m probably not the one to discover cancer’s cure or invent the next worldwide technological phenomenon. I’m much too vain for that. But even still, I know as well as I know that fashion rules are meant to be broken, I’m meant to do something. Something other than punch a time-clock and anxiously scramble to fatten someone else’s already obese piggy bank. I’m guessing you are too.
So why don’t we? What’s stopping us? Why do we voluntarily sign up for indentured servitude when we can be freely running and jumping with vigor and vitality toward our goals; hurdling ourselves aggressively over life’s fences to realize our dreams? We get so complacent. So distracted. So contented with mediocrity. So (un)comfortably numb.
Can we agree to stop that this New Year? Promise me you’ll find your passion. Promise me you’ll tell yourself to shut up when you start that same old pattern of self-bullying. Promise me you’ll discard the trash other people try to shove into your life (like the goofballs who tell you “mixed prints/mixed metals/mixed colors are a no-no” – style segregation is so passé). Promise me, starting today, you’ll pick yourself up and dust yourself off, grit your teeth, stretch yourself beyond what’s comfortable, fight the urge to quit, and courageously engage in the process of unfolding your own glorious destiny – and look great doing it!
